Fat PS2. Modchipped (modchip type unknown), bought modchipped from Ebay for ten GBP! UK PS2, model SCPH-30003 R, Serial B2972854, PAL.
Did not work with Network Adapter until I removed the 3 metal plates from the adapter that were causing problems touching some internal components!! (read others had this problem too).
Works GREAT with my Maxtor 6Y160P0 Diamondmax plus 9 160GB 3 1/2" drive, but DOES NOT like my Hitachi 80GB laptop drive listed here.
It detects the Hitachi fine when you connect with a 3 1/2" to 2 1/2" adapter and when you slice off some PCB off the adapter and rewire the 4 power terminals to the power socket (since power socket had to be moved over to fit) and formats OK and even adds a game to the HDD but the game (CMR2005 NTSC U) did not launch, got instead black screen. Tried it several times.
Hitachi had been used previously in Win98 laptop and was working fine.
However the Maxtor desktop drive just works fine with my PS2!! No black screen except only for a very few seconds whilst being launched from HD Loader. I am using my ESR / FreeMCBoot (Newbie package from SKapps) exploited memory card to get HDloader to start at boot (otherwise no HDD shown in browser and can't load HDloader unless you have a DVD of it in the tray), it detects the Maxtor HDD pretty quickly and loads VERY fast (Tomb Raider Anniversary PAL loaded the level and fuel guage went across screen in like 3 to 4 seconds compared to a LOT longer with DVD). Disc not needed to be in drive to play from power on!
Pity the Modchip is an early model and only detects original / backup CD's as audio CD's (music plays fine but won't load them as PS1 discs, PS2 DVD's only, CD titles have to be converted to DVD with DVDpatcher 3.7)
EDIT: OK, Wierdness, CMR2005 doesn't work on my Maxtor either when I just checked, but Tomb Raider Legend (NTSC-U) does work, and so does Tomb Raider Anniversary (PAL UK), they both work great and both reduce loading times greatly and stop wearing my laser out.
In reflection I suspect the Hitachi would work, but I'm marking it as not working for now, and will test it out with TRL / TRA later. |
