Fat PS2. Modchipped (modchip type unknown), bought modchipped from Ebay for ten GBP! UK PS2, model SCPH-30003 R, Serial B2972854, PAL.

Did not work with Network Adapter until I removed the 3 metal plates from the adapter that were causing problems touching some internal components!! (read others had this problem too).

This Maxtor 6Y160P0 Diamondmax plus 9, 160GB, 3 1/2" drive works GREAT.

It detects the HDD quickly in HDLoader 0.8c and formats quickly and adds games to the HDD just fine. Some games (e.g. CMR2005 PAL) did not launch, got instead black screen. Tried it several times. This is apparently because you have to set HDloader into "Mode 3" (something to do with pressing SELECT on the gamepad) and do something which I don't understand just yet. Nothing to do with this particular HDD apparently, just a general compatability with the game and version of HDloader / installation on PS2.

This drive had been used previously in a WinXP desktop PC night and day since 2003 and was working fine.

Most games work. No black screens in those except only for a very few seconds before the game starts whilst being launched from HD Loader. I am using my ESR / FreeMCBoot (Newbie package from SKapps) exploited memory card to get HDloader to start at boot (otherwise no HDD shown in browser and can't load HDloader unless you have a DVD of it in the tray), it detects the Maxtor HDD very quickly and reliably and loads VERY fast (Tomb Raider Anniversary PAL loaded the level and fuel guage went across screen in like 3 to 4 seconds compared to a LOT longer with DVD). Disc not needed to be in drive to play from power on!

Pity the Modchip is an early model and only detects original / backup CD's as audio CD's (music plays fine but won't load them as PS1 discs, PS2 DVD's only, PS2 CD titles have to be converted to DVD with DVDpatcher 3.7)

Also running games from stops my laser wearing out which does happen on these old fat PS2's. And you stop those horrid grinding and clicking PS2 access noises from the DVD drive (which is noisy on my fat PS2). I can only barely hear the HDD over the fan of the PS2 (which runs faster and gets louder the instant the HDD switches on). Must get a quiet replacement fan for it sometime.
